Sugar Act: What was it & important info
First revenue act, passed in 1764. Import duties on coffee, wine, etc. and cracked down on smuggling of French molasses.
Stamp Act: What was it & important info
1765, required all transactions with paper to be taxed. Money was spent on more British armies in colonies, angered colonists.
Townshend Acts: What was it & important info
1767, placed taxes on tea and lead products. “No taxation without representation”, boycotted and rebelled, increasing the violence.
Boston Tea Party: What was it & important info
Dec. 16, 1777. Group of colonists dressed as indians dumped tea into Boston Harbor. Directly caused Intolerable Acts.

Sep. 5 - Oct. 26, 1774. Caused by the Intolerable Acts: Complaint letter to English, appeal to fellow colonies, complete boycott of British goods Never discussed revolution
Intolerable Acts: What was it & important info
Directly caused by Boston Tea Party. Closed Boston Port until tea was repaid, King could make legislature meetings anywhere and anytime, new quartering act, newer & harsher admiralty courts, King told French they could expand into the Ohio Valley if well behaved.

May 10, 1775 - March 1, 1781. First offered the Olive Branch Petition (1775), then Declaration of Independence. Acted as govt for colonies during rev., organized Continental Army and placed Washington in charge, passed the Articles of Confederation.

Sep. 17 & Oct. 7, 1777, British General Burgoyne surrendered and gave colonists a clear victory. France openly supported the US because of it (Franco-American Alliance) TURNING POINT OF THE WAR
Franco-American Alliance: What was it & important info
France resisted a formal alliance at first but Saratoga changed their minds in 1777. In 1778, trading rights were approved, France gave up its American claims and recognized US as an independent nation.
Yorktown: What was it & important info
Sep. - Oct., 1781 in Yorktown, VA. Continental & French forces pushed British Navy off, securing a victory. British surrendered, British withdrew from the war. MOSTLY ENDED THE WAR
Treaty of Paris 1783: What was it & important info
Formally ended war and recognized US as a nation. US gained control of territory to Mississippi River, returned property to rightful owners. Both sides were responsible for debts, prisoners of war were returned.

Passed by 2nd Con. Congress, ratified in 1781 when states handed over western land to central govt. Weak central govt, states could say no, no taxing powers, no national currency, no authority to speak for the nation, 9/13 states needed to pass laws, all needed to amend
