Who generally issues Ship Certificates?
Flag or an Recognised Organisation
What is a Recognised Organisation?
An organisation recognised by the Flag State, for carrying out Survey and Certification work on Behalf of Flag.
These are generally Classification Societies.
What is a Classification Society?
These are organisations which develop and apply
technical standards for the design and construction of
ships.
Employ qualified personnel with expertise in certain
areas.
Their standards are mostly over and above what
SOLAS requires.
What other types of RO’s are there?
Recognised Security Organisations.
A private body recognised by the flag as having sufficient expertise and qualified personnel to carry out assessment work.
Where would you find a list of Certs required to be carried onboard?

Why are ships Classed?
To provide technical info of the ship to insurance underwriters.
Will find it easier to get cargo, charters etc
Usually required to join a P&I club
How would you know your ship is built to a specific class Standard?
Cert of Class containing Class notations as per “Rules of a Classification Society”.
What do class ensure before and during build?
That the Material, Workmanship and Arrangements are in Accordance with Class Society Rules

When would a vessel be issued with an Interim Cert of Class?
If a Vessel Grounds and subsequently reflects or damage is sustained to the Hull or Machinery from any cause, The Master should noted Protest and call a Class surveyor.. On completion of his survey an Interim Cert of Class would be issued.
The Interim Cert of Class may be Qualified or Unqualified
Where can a Condition of Class be issued?
A condition of class can only be issued to an Interim Certificate of Class
