Why do ships have load lines?
So they don’t go to sea overloaded.
The load line makes it easy for anyone to determine if the ship has been overloaded.
How often is the load line certificate inspected?
Annual Survey visual check of Cert - Condition of Assignment + certain tests.
And 5 yearly.
What is involved in an initial Loadline Survey?
Complete and thorough examination of the ships structure both internally and externally.
An examination of all openings giving access to spaces below the freeboard and superstructure decks, guard rails, the freeing ports and means of access to crew quarters.
How would you prepare for a Loadline survey?
Call for a Ship Staff Meeting.
Instruct C/O to consult the COA.
As master Check all Certs.
C/O and Deck Crew would check all items Weather-tight above the Deck Line.
-Air pipes, Sounding Pipes, Freeing ports clear, Weathertighness of Hatch Covers, Bulwarks, Guard Rails, Draft Marks, Loadline Marks.
Check Watertight below Deck Line.
- Check Watertight doors and Portholes - In engine check Over-boards and Cooling inlet.
Why can you load deeper when loaded to Timber Loadlines?
Ships loaded in a accordance with the Timber Deck Code - can load deeper with a lower Freeboard as the Timber lashed on deck “Provides Protection against the Impact of Waves”
What is the Deck Line?
This is the upper most continuous deck of a ship to which all transverse watertight bulkheads extend.
What if the desired Loadline mark is submerged after loading in port?
Calculate the DWA. Ship should rise when in saltwater
Where would you load to when going from Summer to Winter?
Load to winter taking into account consumables.
