What is the International Anti Fouling System Cert
Required under the AFS convention
Provides details of the Anti Fouling System applied.
If you were to change your paint system what happens to the AFS Cert?
If a change of more than 25% then a new AFS Cert will be issued.
How much of a change of Anti Foul would require a survey and new cert to be issued?
More than 25%

What is the Difference between Annual, Intermediate and Periodical Surveys?
Annual is just a visual check
Intermediate is also a Visual inspection but will be covering a broader range of items / equipment.
Periodical is any survey which involves testing of equipment.
E.G.: (Radio Survey you have to transmit so that Periodcal, Safety Equipment - on the Intermediate Survey - testing is involved so its Periodical on the 2/3rd year)
How often do certs have to surveyed / renewed?
There is a 3 month grace period either side on Surveys on all Statutory Certs.
Except for ISM DoC. This has to be done within 3 months before renewal.
What is a Statutory Cert?
Any Cert backed up by a Statutory Instrument.
What is the difference between an Exemption and Dispensation?
An Exemption is usually long term - Normally in line with the Validity of the Cert. i.e. Nav Lights not placed on the vessel along with SOLAS requirements on the CS.SafEquip Cert. Will be reviewed by Flag at each renewal.
A Dispensation is short term. Up to 3 Months.
How would you know your ship is complying with the HSSC? (Harmonised System of Survey and Certification)
All Certs would have a 5 yr validity.
Applies to : Loadline, SOLAS, MARPOL certs
Other than PSSC - remains 12month Validity
When may an extension be offered to certificate?
An extension may be granted to a Cert, such as if discovered the SMC is out of date. Can apply to flag for an Extension to have the survey carried out at the next available port. Extension can be up to 3 months.
