Risk & Resilience Flashcards
Risk Groups
Since the 1950’s there gas been a significant improvement in living conditions and physical health, but surveys consistently show negative outcomes for those in low income families and ethnic minorities… placing them as risk groups.
Deficit Model
Failure of risk groups is due to poor quality parent- child language or parental attitudes towards school
Difference Model
The language used and content taught in schools is dominated by white, middle-class ideologies. Risk stems from deprivation; whether it be of material or social aspects
Intervention
1) Identifying high risk individuals
2) Intervening to help reduce difficulties
3) social prevention- reducing damage to themselves or others
Intervention must focus on both the individual, family and role of schools
Resilience
Uncovering how children who may be exposed to adversity might be supported through enrichment. Focus on helping boost each individuals resilience and protective factors
Resilience- an individual’s ability to properly adapt to stress and adversity. This does not mean they are free from crises but have found ways of coping
Protective Factors…
Examples
- Supportive Relationships
- Access to good education
- Sense of competence
- Participation in hobbies
- Adequate family income
Protective Factors; Werner (1989-2004)
Conducted a 40 year longitudinal study in Hawaii.
High risk individuals who grew up in disadvantage and neglect had the poorest outcomes. However some of these high risk individuals showed resilience because they had at least one person in their lives that loved them unconditionally
