Emotional Intelligence Flashcards
Sense of self as distinct from others
at 9-12 months infants are capable of some differnitation of themselves from others
By 15-18 months they use verbal labels
Lewis & Brooks- Gunn
Babies were placed in front of a mirror and rouge was wiped on their nose
9-12 m did not touch their nose
some 15-18 m did touch their nose
most 21-22 m touched their nose
suggesting self awareness develops around 22 m
Emotional Regulation
Children must learn to regulate their emotions in order to cope with the range of situations that they encounter
2 Aspects of Emotional Regulation
1) Producing & managing own emotions
2) Recognising & responding to the emotions of others
Producing & managing own emotions
An individuals expression of emotion communicates their intention to those they interact with and this influences how others respond
Babies are born with innate emotions (social releasers), and as they grow and develop they are able to produce more complex emotions
Recognising & responding to the emotions of others
Research suggests that babies can discriminate emotions in others
eg. babies responded with a similar emotion to what their mother displayed
** Social Referencing
Social Referencing
Forming an understanding of a situation by using someone else’s interpretation
Sorce et al: Visual Cliff
if they mother stood by the deep end and looked fearful they baby would not crawl over the visual cliff. However, if the mother looked happy and encouraging then they would crawl across.
Harris’ 3 Preconditions
1) self-awareness
2) capacity for pretence
3) Distinguishing reality from pretence
Once a child is aware of their own emotional state they can use this ability to pretence (as if someone else was experiencing this emotional state) and realise that the other persons ‘imagined reality’ is often different from their own
