Cognition Flashcards
How did Piaget’s work come about?
Children worked with early years developments of intelligence tests observing children. He became interested in the mistakes children made and thought these could provide an insight into their cognitive processes
Piaget’s 4 Stages of Cognitive Development
1) Sensor- Motor Stage
Newborn focuses on almost entirely immediate sensory and motor experiences —-> Toddler’s have rudimental capacity for thinking
6 sub-stages: the final stage ‘Internal representation’ (Object permanence & planned actions) has contradicting research to suggest it develops at an earlier age
Bower- A screen was placed in front of an object and removed again. the object was either there or it wasn’t. When it wasn’t the baby was shocked= suggesting they understand object permanence at as early as 2-3 months
2) Pre- operational Stage
Think about things more symbolically but this is pre-conceptual and intuitive
They tend to think egocentrically
eg. 3 mountain task
3) Concrete Operational Stage
Can grasp more complex tasks and think more flexibly by using objects to contextualise learning
4) Formal Operational Stage
Can reason hypothetically and work systematically
