Intelligence & Attainment Flashcards
Galton (1880’s)
First attempt to scientifically measure intelligence
included physical and behavioural measurements as Galton believed intelligence was an underlying trait that influences all performance
Binet & Simon (1905)
trialed their intelligence tests in schools to see which ones best identified children who were failing to make progress and then rated them in order of difficulty
They were effective in identifying children who needed help and gave them an ‘x- years delay’ score
Terman (1916)
Developed Binet 7 Simon’s tests by adding in verbal and non-verbal scales
Calculated the score through a ratio of mental age: Chronological age= a fraction (x100)
Score was given is known as intelligence quotient (IQ)
Wechsler
Intelligence Scale for Children (WISC- IV) —> on it’s 4th edition
Standardised (tested on a represntative population) to improve validity and reliablity
Attainment Tests
To measure what a person has achieved after specific training. To see wheter they have reached a certain poitn or not
eg. Driving tests, school exams, music grading
A certification of competence, a motivation to learn, a record of progress
