rinnes and webers test Flashcards
what does a Rinne’s and Weber’s test do?
allows differentiation of conductive and SN deafness
what do you do in a Rinne’s test?
place tuning fork over mastoid process until sound is no longer heard, followed by repositioning just over external acoustic meatus
for Rinne’s, what does a ‘positive test’ mean?
air conduction (AC) is normally better than bone conduction (BC)
for Rinne’s, what does a ‘negative test’ mean?
BC > AC ⇒ conductive deafness
what do you do in a Weber’s test?
place tuning fork in the middle of the forehead equidistant from pt’s ears, then ask pt which side is loudest
in Weber’s, what does it mean when the sound is localised to the unaffected side?
unilateral SN deafness
in Weber’s, what does it mean when sound is localised to the affected side?
unilateral conductive deafness
Rinne’s: AC > BC bilaterally
Weber’s: midline
interpretation?
normal
Rinne’s:
BC > AC in affected ear
AC > BC in unaffected ear
Weber’s:
lateralises to affected ear
interpretation?
conductive HL
Rinne’s: AC > BC bilaterally
Weber’s: lateralised to unaffected ear
SNHL
