what is Meniere’s disease?
A
disorder of the inner ear of unknown cause

what is Meniere’s disease characterised by?
A
excessive pressure and progressive dilation of the endolymphatic system

what are the features of Meniere’s disease?
A
- recurrent episodes of vertigo, tinnitus and SNHL
- sensation of aural fullnesss/pressure
- others: nystagmus, +ve Romberg’s
- episodes last mins-hours
- typically unilateral sx but bilateral sx may develop after a number of years

what is the natural hx of Meniere’s disease?
A
- symptoms resolve in majority of pts after 5-10 years
- majority of pt left with a degree of hearing loss
- pyschological distress

Q
how is a pt with Meniere’s disease managed?
A
- ENT assessment to confirm Dx
- pt should inform DVLA. cease driving until satisfactory control of sx.

Q
how do you manage acute attacks of Meniere’s disease?
A
buccal or IM prochlorperazine
admission sometimes required

how do you prevent future attacks of Meniere’s?
A
betahistine and vestibular rehabilitation exercises
