Ribs Flashcards
How many pairs of ribs are there
12
How do the ribs articulate
1-7 articulate directly with the sternum, 8-10 connect to cartilage of the rib above and 11-12 are known as floating ribs
Where is the head of the rib
This is the swollen proximal part of the rib
Where is the articular facet of the head
These are the two articular surfaces on the head, Rib 1 and 10-12 only have one
Where is the neck of the rib
This is the short segment between the head and the tubercle
Where is the tubercle
This is a medial articular facet below the head of the rib
Where is the angle
This is the sharp curve in the bone lateral to the tubercle
Where is the costal groove
This is along the medial side of the inferior edge
What is the shaft
This is the curve of the rib from the tubercle to the distal end
Which is the sternal end of the rib
This is the anterior end of the shaft, this is usually rough and flat but 11-12 are pointed
Where is the scalene tubercle of the first rib
This is the bump or point along the inside, in about the middle
How would you side a rib
For the first rib the head and neck point inferiorly, for all other ribs the heads point towards the midline and the tubercles are inferior (down)
