Metatarsals Flashcards
How many metatarsals are there
5
How would you identify the 1st metatarsal
This is the shortest but fattest of the metatarsals, it articulates with the medial cuneiform. This is for the big toe
How would you side the 1st metatarsal
The basal facet has a convex medial profile and a straight lateral profile
How would you identify the 2nd metatarsal
This is the longest and narrowest metatarsal. IT has two lateral facets at the base. Very slightly more pointed base
How would you side the 2nd metatarsal
The most proximal point on the base is lateral to the main shaft
How would you identify the 3rd metatarsal
This is very similar to the second but its base has two medial facets and a single large lateral facet. There is a larger base and distal tubercle
How would you side the 3rd metatarsal
The most proximal point on the base is lateral to the main shaft
How would you identify the 4th metatarsal
This is shorter than the 2nd/3rd, it has a single medial and lateral facets , the medial facet is fairly oval
How would you side the 4th metatarsal
The most proximal point on the base is lateral to the main shaft
How would you identify the 5th metatarsal
The fifth metatarsal is the only one with a styloid process projecting proximally
How would you side the 5th metatarsal
The styloid process is lateral. Groove on the base of the tubercle in inferior
How would you generally side metatarsals
Metatarsal bases are always proximal and the most proximal part of the base is always lateral
