What is RHD?
Heart valves permanently damages due to rheumatic fever
What is rheumatic fever?
Complication of untreated streptococcal infection
Causes inflammatory changes in the heart and joints
- Polyarthritis
- Skin rashes
- Fever
- Pancarditis
What are aschoff bodies?
Nodules found in the hearts of individuals with rheumatic fever
What does pancarditis develop into?
Chronic rheumatic heart disease
Mainly manifests as vascular abnormalities
What valvular abnormalities occur as a result of RHD?
Stenosis
Regurgitation
Vegetation
What is vegetation?
Infective or thrombotic nodules develop on valve leaflets impairing mobility
What are the symptoms of RHD?
Fever
Chest pain
Fatigue
Difficulty breathing
Swollen joints
Heart palpitations
Nodules on skin
What is the treatment of RHD?
NSAIDs- aspirin
Steroids- cortisone
Valve repair surgery
