Q

What is the histological appearance of aortic dissection?

A

Cystic medial necrosis
Cysts replace smooth muscle and elastin in T/media weakening the artery

16
Q

What are examples of aortic infections/inflammation?

A

Takayasu’s arteritis- granulomatous vasculitis
Syphilitic aortitis

17
Q

What are examples of inherited aortic disorders?

A

Bicuspid aortic valve
Aortic coarctation
Marfan’s syndrome

18
Q

What is bicuspid aortic valve?

A

Prone to stenosis and regurgitation
Leads to aneurysm and dissection

19
Q

What is aortic coarctation?

A

Narrowing of aorta near to ligamentum arteriosus (closed ductus arteriosus)
- Pre ductal
- Ductal
- Post ductal

20
Q

What is Marfan’s syndrome?

A

genetic condition
Mutation in fibrillin 1 gene causing connective tissue weakness
Causes aorta to weaken and widen- at risk of dissection
