What is systemic sclerosis
Chronic disease caused by abnormal growth of connective tissue. Leads to thickening and hardening of the skin and often inner organs
Describe CREST syndrome
C- calcinosis cutis which are small white calcium deposits on pressure points of extremities
R- raynaud phenomenon
E- esophageal hypomotility which can cause dysphagia Barrett esophagus gerd heart burn
S- sclerodactyly
T- telangiectasia
Classify systemic sclerosis in two categories
Limited cutaneous and diffuse
Diffuse involves organs
Diagnostic findings of systemic sclerosis
Presence of ANA in approx 90% of cases
Limited ssc: anticentromere antibodies(ACA)
Diffuse: anti scl -70
Anti rna polymerase 3
Increased gamma globulins on electrophoresis
When is immunosuppressive therapy indicated in systemic sclerosis and what agent is used
If there is severe organ involvement
Methotrexate
