Review Chapter 9 Flashcards
Axon
The part of a neuron that conducts impulses away from it’s cell body.
Cell body
The portion of a neuron containing the nucleus.
Dendrite
Highly branched input part of a neuron
Efferent
Another name for a motor neuron
Ganglion
Groups of cell bodies outside the CNS
Gray Matter
Unmyelinated axons of neurons, cell bodies and dendrites
Interneuron
Short neurons (active in Integration)
Motor neuron
Neuron that conveys information from the CNS to an effector
Myelin
The insulating material of peripheral neuron fibers
Nerve
A bundle of myelinated fibers outside of the CNS
Nervous System Functions
Sensation, Integration, and Motor function
Neuroglia
Provide support and protection for the nervous system, bind nervous tissue to blood vessels, form myelin, and serve phagocytic functions. They are small and abundant. Can form brain tumors known as gliomas.
Neurolemma
Surrounds the sheath; only found in the axons of the PNS (produces Myelin)
Neuron
Nerve cell- carries impulses
Node of Ranvier
Unmyelinated gap in the myelin sheath
