Responsible Use Of Anitimicrobials Flashcards
1
Q
What are some reasons why antibiotics don’t work?
A
- Treating too late (advanced tissue damage)
- Immunosuppressed animals
•Concurrent illness
•Nutritional deficiencies
•Metabolic status
2
Q
What do antibiotics do?
A
Antibiotics inhibit/kill bacteria… the immune system cleans up, repairs and returns tissues to normal function.
3
Q
What are some considerations when treating with antimicrobials?
A
- What are we treating? -> Pathogen?
•Microscopic examination (Gram stain)
•Lab cytology
•Susceptibility testing
•Where is the infection? - Antimicrobial
• Mechanism of action
•Spectrum
•Time vs. Concentration dependent
4
Q
What are some considerations when treating with drugs?
A
- Host: Age, reproductive status, organ function
- Other: Cost, route, frequency, duration
5
Q
What is withdrawal time?
A
- Interval required after dosing for tissue concentrations of a drug or its metabolic to deplete to less than a specific concentration that has been established as being safe for human consumption
6
Q
What does ELDU allow?
A
- Allows veterinarians to prescribe extra-label uses of approved animal and human drug when the health of an animal it threatened, or when suffering or death may result from failure to treat an animal
7
Q
What legalizes ELDU?
A
- AMDUCA
- Animal medicinal drug use clarification act
8
Q
What are some examples of ELDU?
A
- Changing the label dose, route, frequency, or duration of a drug
- Giving the drug to a different production class or species
- Giving the drug for an indication not listed on the label
- Changing the amount of drug per injection site
9
Q
What is a Veterinary Feed Directive Order?
A
- A written statement from a licensed veterinarian that authorizes a client to obtain and use a VFD drug in or on animal feed in accordance with label directions that are approved or indexed by the VFD
NOTE: Extra-label use of a VFD drug is strictly prohibited
