Classification Of Pathogenic Organisms Flashcards
Pathogen
Anything able to cause disease
Cellular Pathogen (Living)
-Parasites
-Protozoa
-Fungi
-Prokaryote
Acellular Pathogen (Non-living)
-Virus
-Prion
Bacteria
- Single cell
- Can grow by themselves and produce toxins
Viruses
Can’t grow by themselves, must infect their host before they can grow
Parasites
Can’t survive without a host, but can cause infections in many different animals (less specific than viruses)
Primary Source of Microorganisms
-Air
-Water
-Soil
Secondary Sources of Microorganisms
-Plants
-Animals and humans (intestinal tracts, hides, hands, skin/ nose)
-Utensils and Processing equipment
Why is it important to classify pathogenic microorganisms?
Type of microorganism influences treatment and prevention
Gram stain
- Crystal Violet
- Grams Iodine
- Decolonizer (alcohol)
- Safranin
Aerobes
Require presence of oxygen to grow
Anaerobes
Require the absence of oxygen for growth
Facultative Anaerobes
Grow in the presence or absence of oxygen
Psychrophiles
Cold tolerant, capable of growth at temperature below 7° C
Mesophile
Grow within a temperature range of 20-45°C (body temperature)
Thermophile
Grow at temperatures above 45°C
Sporeforming Bacteria
Gram positive rods for endospores
-Bacillus anthracite, Clostridium spp.
Antagonistic Interaction
One organism produces a substance which inhibits the growth of another
Symbiotic Interaction
Simultaneous growth without interaction
Synergistic Interaction
Growth of one organism causes change that favor growth of another
LAB
Lactic Acid Bacteria
What do do LABs do?
Ferment carbohydrates into organic acids which inhibits:
- Salmonella spp.
- Staphylococcus spp.
-Listeria monocytogenes
- Clostridium perfringens, Clostridium botulinum
- E. coli O157:H7
LABs are found where?
Plants
Soil
Animals
Human gut
What factors affect growth and survival of microorganisms?
1) Invasiveness
2) Ability to evade the host immune response
3) Overall health of the animal
4) Virulence factors (the severity or harmfulness of a disease)
5) Production of toxins
- Kill host cells
- Ability to cause disease
6) Capsule
- Reduce/ eliminate phagocytosis
