Respiratory system P1 Flashcards
Cells need energy for
their chemical activity to maintain homeostasis.
Respiratory system provides
the route for O2 to gain entry and CO2 to be excreted.
As it moves through passages to lungs it is:
Warmed/cooled to body temp.
Moistened with water vapour.
Cleaned as particles stick to mucus lining membrane.
The roof of the nose is the
Cribriform plate, Ethmoid bone, Sphenoid bone, Frontal bone, Nasal bone.
The floor of the nose is a
Hard and Soft palate maxilla (jaw), Ethmoid, Inferior Conchae.
The functions of the nose are
-Filters - Olfactory Function (smell) -Warms - Nasolacrimal Ducts (drains tears from eyes)
-Moistens
How long is the pharynx?
12cm long
What are the 3 parts of the pharynx?
Nasopharynx (ciliated columnar), Oropharynx (stratified squamous, fibrous tissue, smooth muscle) and the Laryngopharynx.
What are the functions of the pharynx?
-Passageway for air and food - Taste
-Warms/ Humidifies - Speech
-Hearing - Protection
What is the larynx?
Root of the tongue (hyoid bone) – to the trachea
What are the functions of the larynx?
-Production of sound - Cough Reflex
-Volume, pitch, resonance - Filters, warms, moistens
-Protection of lower airways
How long is the trachea?
12cm to 13cm in adults
How many c-shaped cartilages does the trachea have?
16-20 incomplete
What are the three layers of tissue?
- Outer layer (fibrous and elastic tissue)
- Middle layer (cartilage and muscle tissue)
- Inner layer (ciliated columnar epithelium)
What are the functions of the trachea?
-Support and patency
- Cough Reflex
-Mucociliary Escalator
- Warms, moistens and filters the air
