Integumentary 2 Flashcards
Some examples of sensory receptors?
sensitive to touch, temperature, pressure and pain.
What is absorption?
a route by which substances can enter the body through the skin.
What is excretion?
the process of removing wastes and excess water from the body.
What are the several factors that absorption depend on?
concentration, duration of contact, solubility of medication and physical condition of the skin and part of the body exposed.
What are some specific waste products that must be excreted from the body?
carbon dioxide, protein catabolism and from nucleic acid catabolism.
What are the types of wounds?
abrasion, laceration, avulsion, incision, puncture, amputation.
What is primary healing?
follows minimal destruction of the tissue for example surgical incision.
What is inflammation?
first few hours the cut surface becomes inflamed the gap is filled with fibrin and cell debris.
What are phagocytes?
they remove clots and cell debris which stimulate fibroblast activity.
What is secondary healing?
extensive tissue destruction, where edges of wounds cannot be brought together, such as pressure sores or ulcers, healing time relates to the size of the wound and removal of the cause.
Where are the sweat glands?
numerous in palms, soles of feet, axillae and groins.
What are the two types of sweat gland?
eccrine and apocrine.
What does excessive sweating lead to?
dehydration and serious depletion of sodium chloride.
What are some effects of aging on skin?
epidermis thins, vitamin d production decreases, loss of pigment melanin and fewer elastic fibres.
When arterioles form a fine network with capillary branches is supplies?
sweat glands, sebaceous glands, hair follicles and the dermis.
