Blood types Flashcards
What are human blood types classified based on?
the absence of certain antigens on the surface of red blood cells.
What are the two most important classification systems?
ABO and Rh factor.
What is type A?
has a antigens on the surface of red blood cells and anti b antibodies in the plasma.
What is type B?
has B antigens on the surface and anti A antibodies in the plasma.
What is Type AB?
it has both a and b antigens and no anti a and b antibodies
What is type O?
Has no a or be antigens but both anti a and b antibodies in the plasma.
What is Rh- positive?
has the Rh antigen on the surface of red blood cells.
What is Rh negative?
does not have the Rh antigen.
What is a universal donor?
Type o- blood can be donated to any other blood type.
What is universe recipient?
Type AB + blood can be received from any other blood type because it has no antibodies that will react.
What is an antigen?
a molecule that may be recognised by the immune system and trigger an immune response by activating leukocytes that fight disease.
