Respiratory System Flashcards
What is the pleural membrane?
The sac around the lungs
- allows the respiratory system to remain a closed system (gas can’t escape from the lungs to the surrounding area)
Mutated lung cells form tumors (often caused by tar from smoking)
Lung cancer
The back of the throat, holds both food and air
Pharynx
How does the diaphragm work to allow you to breathe?
When you **inhale, **the diaphragm pulls down, your rib cage expands, and air rushes in
When you exhale, the diaphragm pushes up, the rib cage contracts, and air is pushed out
Warms, moistens, and cleans the air
Nose (sinuses)
Breathing is controlled by:
- The medulla oblongata - part of the brain
- The concentration of carbon dioxide in the blood
Swollen and mucus clogged bronchi are symptoms of
Chronic bronchitis
Elastic sacs that facilitate gas exchange
Lungs
The large, flat muscle at the bottom of the chest cavity
Diaphragm
What is the function of the respiratory system?
The main function of the respiratory system is to perform the exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide between the blood, air, and body tissues
The main structures of the respiratory system are:
Bronchial Tubes
Lungs
Pharynx
Nose
Epiglottis
Larynx
Trachea
Bronchioles
Alveoli
Tiny air sacs in the lungs where gas exchange takes place
Alveoli
What are the two large passageways that lead to the lungs?
Bronchial tubes
Sinuses are also known as
Nose
The top of the trachea, vocal cords
Larynx
