Excretory System Flashcards
What are the components of the urinary system?
Kidneys, ureter, urinary bladder, and urethra
Center of the kidney, where kidney stones may form
Pelvis
What is the function of the renal vein?
Takes blood away from the kidney
What are the main organs of the excretory system and their function?
Skin - excretes excess water, salt, and small amounts of urea Lungs - dispels carbon dioxide and water Kidneys - filters urea, reabsorbs water
Liner layer of the kidney where urea collection takes place
Medulla
How long does it take to filter ALL of your blood?
Approximately 45 minutes
Three common diseases of the excretory system are
Kidney stones Kidney transplants Dialysis
The three parts of a nephron are
Glomerulus - capillary ball inside of capsule Bowmans Capsule - surrounds the glomerulus (water and waste leave the glomerulus and enters capsule) Loop of Henle - water is reabsorbed and waste continues on to the pelvis of kidney
The functions of the excretory system are to
Maintain homeostasis Filter cellular waste from the blood Maintain body pH Reabsorb water content for the blood
What is the function of the urinary bladder?
Holds urine Sensor at the top sends info to the brain to let you know when it’s full
What is the function of the renal artery?
Brings blood to the kidney
Outer layer of the kidney, contains nephrons
Cortex
Connects the kidney to the bladder
Ureter
Tube to the outside, has a sphincter muscle (to keep you from peeing uncontrollably)
Urethra
Drains to urinary bladder
Ureter
