Respiratory System Flashcards
Pharynx
Function : to connect nasal cavity to mouth
Structure: big space where air can meet
Nasal cavities
Function: where air goes in
Structure: moved air, cleans air and warms
Esophagus
Function: tube that food goes to get to the stomach
Structure: a tube that allows food to get to the stomach
Trachea
Function: air goes through tube to get to lungs
Structure: A tube that allows air to travel to lungs has. Is hard on all sides except on so the esophagus can expand into it
Epiglottis
Function: to not let food to go into lungs and so air can’t go into a stomach
Structure: a flap that either covers the esophagus or the trachea
Larynx
Function: allows people to talk
Structure: air passed through vocal cords and cords vibrate and create sound.
Lungs
Function site of gas exchange fills up with air
Structure is elasticity and allows to expand
Bronchioles
Function passage ways for air
Structure to transport and keep are clean also so it doesn’t collapse also gas exchange can only happen in small vessels
Bronchus
Function to transport air from the trachea to the lungs
Structure filters and doesn’t collapse
Aveoli
Function site of gas exchange
Structure encrusted surface area and more efficient gas exchange and must be thin
Diaphragm
Function makes lungs exhale and inhale helps with venous return
Structure must be strong big also on inhalation creates pressure in abdomen and helps with venous return
Goblet cell
Creates mucus
Mucus
Anti bacterial traps things moistens air transported by cilia
Cilia
Little hairs that trap things and move around other things
