Respiratory System Flashcards
functions of respiratory system (4)
-oxygen to cells and CO2 out
-sound production
-temperature & regulation
-sense of smell
what 2 systems work together for oxygen to be brought to cells and bringing CO2 out
cardiovascular and respiratory
2 portions of respiratory system - Function
-air conducting
-gas exchange
air conducting portion
passageways that air moves through from outside the body to lungs
gas exchange portion
-occurs in alveoli within the lungs
-oxygen moves in & CO2 moves out of blood
Parts of the Upper Respiratory Tract
-nostrils
-nasal passages
-pharynx = throat
-larynx = voice box
-trachea = windpipe
function of nasal passages
-passages in head to warm, humidify, & filter air
nasal turbinate bones
in nasal passages
Parts of Lower Respiratory Tract
-primary bronchi
-lungs
-secondary and tertiary bronchi
-bronchioles
-alveoli
primary bronchi
-where trachea divides into 2 branches
-1 left and 1 right lung
alveoli
oxygen and CO2 are exchanged between air and blood
diaphragm
-thin skeletal muscles that separates chest cavity from abdominal cavity
-important in breathing
respiratory tract defenses (4)
-nasal turbinate bones
-mucociliary escalator
-coughing
-sneezing
nasal turbinate bones function
-create turbulent air flow
-large particles in air drop out and stick to nasal mucosa
mucociliary escalator
-covers all air conducting surfaces
-particles land in mucus layer
mucus & particles are moved toward pharynx by cilia and swallowd
-goblet cells produce mucus
coughing
-remove mucus and other material from lower respiratory tract
sneezing
remove irritants from nasal passages
pneumonia
inflammation of lungs
-viruses or bacteria are common causes
