Step 1 tx for asthma for 17yrs and above

SABA eg Terbutaline( bricanyl) or salbutamol
Fast acting Inhaler for quick relief of symptoms
State when to move from step 1 asthma management to step 2
If the inhaler does not help and one of the following applies
1. Asthma symptoms > or = 3x/week
2. Waking at Night because of symptoms
3. Asthma uncontrolled with SAB alone
Step 2 Asthma Management for 17yrs and above
Preventer/ Maintenance
SABA + Low dose ICS
Blue + Brown
Eg Qvar Beclometasone 500mcg in two divided doses or Budesonide 400mcg in two divided doses
Step 3 Management for 17yrs and above
SABA +ICS + LEUKOTRIENE RECEPTOR ANTAGONIST
State when to Add lABA
If Step 1- 3 management does not control the ASTHMA
Management of asthma in children under 5yrs
SABA plus ICS and LTRA
What drug in contraindicated in the management of asthma in children under 5
LABA,LAMA or THEOPHYLLINE
Step tx for under 5
Reliever inhaler
SABA with appropriate spacer
Step 2 tx in under 5
SABA plus paediatric moderate dose ICS EASI breathe QVar 8wk trial
Stop ICS after 8wks and monitor child symptoms
If symptoms get better but start again within 4wks of stopping ICS tx
Start ICS again at paediatric dose
If this doesn’t help, move to the next step
