Symptoms of croup
Barking cough
Horse voice
Difficulty breathing
Rasping sound when breathing
Tx for croup mild croup
It’s self limiting but single dose steroid eg Dexamethasone can be used
State how to tx severe croup
Give nebulized adrenaline reduces Airway swelling
Monitor the child carefully to see if croup reoccurs
Facts about croup
Common in baby’s and Young children
Happens after a few days
Worsen at night
Common indication of antihistamines
Nasal and seasonal allergies eg allergic rhinitis
Helps Rhinorrhea ( runny nose and sneezing)
Urticaria ( itchy rash/ hives)
Rashes
Pruritus
Insect bites and stings
Drug allergies
Examples of sedating antihistamine
Alimemazine and promethazine
Non sedating Antihistamines
Acrivastine, bilastine, desloratadine, fexofenadine ,loratidine, mizolastine and rupatadine
Cautions for sedating Antihistamines
Prostatic hypertrophy
Urinary retention
Epilepsy
Children and elderly are more susceptible to side effects
When to avoid Sedating Antihistamines
Avoid in liver disease- risk of coma
Side effects of antihistamines
Drowsiness- may stop after a few days
Less likely in non sedating ones
Headache
Avoid excess alcohol with use if antihistamines
