Respiratory System Flashcards
Where does Gas Exchange take place
Gas exchange takes place within the alveoli
What are the two most important structures for breathing?
Intercoastal muscles and Diaphragm
During inspiration, why does the Diaphragm move down?
To allow more room to be able to breathe.
What process helps Gas exchange to take place?
Diffusion
Why are capillaries and alveoli thin and one cell thick?
To be able to allow oxygen and carbon dioxide to pass through them
State the role of nose and nasal turbinates
They warm, moisten and filter air
State the role of sinuses
The sinuses lighten the skull, humidify air, resonate air, distribution of mucus and helps support the immune system
State the role of the pharynx
For air, food and fluid passageway
What is the role of the larynx?
Air passageway and production of sound
State the role of the hyoid
It supports structure but aids mobility for swallowing and speaking.
State the role of the epiglottis
Closes over the tracheal opening when swallowing to protect the airway from food and fluid
State the role of the trachea.
Passageway for air and contains smooth muscle and connective tissue
State the role of the bronchioles
Passageway for air flow
What is the pleura?
Fluid filled space surrounding lungs for ease of movement
What muscles are inbetween the ribs?
Intercostal muscles
