Give the risk factors for thyroid cancer

Family history of thyroid cancer
Having other cancers

6
Q

Give the treatment for thyroid cancer

A

Thyroidectomy: where some or all of the thyroid is removed

Radioactive iodine treatment kills the cancer cells in the thyroid as thyroxine contains iodine so radioactive iodine would be concentrated by the body in which the cancer cells would be killed.

7
Q

Give the stages of cancer.

A

0-4

0 - the cancer has just started and not spread

4 - cancer has spread to at least one other organ.

Q

What are the treatment options for breast cancer?

A

Breast-conserving surgery that involves tumour removal and other surrounding tissues

Chemo and radio

Hormone therapy - treat tumours that are stimulated by estrogen or progesterone.

16
Q

What is non-hodgkin lymphoma?

A

Cancer that develops within the lymphatic system as the lymphocytes multiply in a abnormal way.

17
Q

Give the risk factors of non-hodgkin lymphoma

A

Weakened immune system
Autoimmune disease
Infection with the Epstein-Barr virus
Infection with helicobacter pylori

18
Q

Treatment for non-hodgkin lymphoma

A

Radiotherapy to treat the early stages

Chemo: used on it’s own or with radio or monoclonal antibodies or higher doses of chemo. But a stem cell or bone marrow transplant may be required.

Monoclonal antibodies: may last up to two years in combination with chemo.

19
Q

What is germ cell testicular cancer?

A

Cancer of the sperm - producing cells and is relatively rare.

20
Q

How is germ cell testicular cancer caused?

A

Uncontrollable cell-division

21
Q

Treatment for germ cell testicular cancer

A

Treatment almost always involves removal of testicle.

22
Q

What two genes is cell division controlled by?

A

TSG - slows down rate of cell division but increases the rate of apoptosis.

Oncogens - increases the rate of cell division.

23
Q

What can a mutation of TSG lead to?

A

Uncontrollable cell division.

24
Q

What is acute myeloid Leukemia?

A

Cancer of the white blood cells.

25
Q

Give the risk factors of Leukemia

A

Exposure to benzene that is found in petrol and cigarette smoke
Genetic disorders e.g. down syndrome
Treatment of chemo or radio can increase the risk.

26
Q

What is the main treatment for AML?

A

Chemotherapy

27
Q

What are factors that increases mutations within cancer?

A

Damage to DNA caused by radiation
Mutations in genes that code for enzymes and proteins involved in checking DNA for errors and repairing those errors.
Biological agents e.g. viruses.

28
Q

Give the factors that can increase cancer

A

Smoking
Diet
Amount of alcohol intake
Age
Family history.
