Homeostasis Flashcards
What must happen for negative feedback to occur?
There has to be movement from the normal level. Negative feedback works in a way that returns a factor back to normal.
What is homeostasis?
Maintaining of an internal environment despite changes in external environment
Receptors
Detects blood concentration of glucose, body temp, C02 and 02
Effectors
Gland and muscles that make changes e.g. secretion of hormones of blood vessel constriction
Feedback systems
Involves control and coordination centre e.g. hypothalamus that receives input from receptors and sends signals = effectors
Role of nervous system in homeostasis
Nerve impulses travel quickly so it is involved in rapid feedback mechanisms.
What is the role of the endocrine system in homeostasis?
It is involved in water balance and blood glucose
Long-term homeostasis because response can be slower when hormones are released into blood and transported to target organs
How does homeostasis contribute to maintaining a healthy body?
Human enzymes have involved with the body and therefore adapted to the temperature of around 37 degrees.
Maintaining stability and function otherwise change to internal or external conditions would prevent enzyme function.
