Respiratory system Flashcards
Respiration is
The exchange of gases b/w the atmosphere and the body
Ventilation means
Bring in of fresh air also known as breathing
Upper respiratory tract consists of
Nose, mouth, pharynx, epiglottis, and larynx
Lower resp tract consist of
Trachea, bronchial tree, and lungs
Nares are
the external openings of the nose area, also called nostrils
The pharynx is the
Area from the back of the nasal cavity and mouth to the larynx
Combining form for pharynx
pharyng/o
The larynx is the area
b/w the pharynx and the trachea also called the voice box
Trachea extends
From the neck to the chest, also called the windpipe
The trachea divides in 2 branches at the
Tracheal bifurcation to form bronchi
Combining form for bronchi
Bronch/o
Bronchioles are
The smallest form of bronchi
Alveoli are
Air sacs in which gas exchange can occur, alveolus is a singular alveoli
Pleura is
The membrane sac that encases the lungs
Has two layers and in between those layers is the pleural space
Diaphragm is
Muscle that separates the thoracic cavity and peritoneal cavity
Diaphragmatic hernia
Abnormal displacement of organs through the diaphgram
-pnea
Breathing
Combining forms referring to oxygen
ox/i, ox/o, ox/y
Combining form referring to CO2
capn/o
Apnea means
Absence of breathing
Dyspnea means
Difficult or laboured breathing
Bradypnea
Abnormally slow respiration rate
Tachypnea
Abnormal rapid respiration rate
Hypoxia
Below normal level of oxygen
Hypercapnia
Above normal levels of CO2 in blood
Stridor
Snoring, squeaking, or whistling that suggests airway narrowing
Bronchoscopy
Visual examination of the bronchus
Cyanosis/cyanotic
Abnormal condition of blue discoloration
Epistaxis
