chapter 10 Flashcards
Integumentary system
Consists of skin and its appendages
Appendages include
glands, hair, fur, wool, feathers, scales, claws, beaks, horns, hooves, and nails
Combining form for skin
cutane/o, derm/o, dermat/o
Three layers of skin
Epidermis- protein keratin, melanin pigment
Dermis- also called corium
Subcutaneous layer/hypodermis- fat or lipids
Glands
Skin glands may be either sebaceous or sweat glands.
Sebaceous glands secrete an oily sub-
stance called sebum.
Seb/o means oil.
Found in anal sacs
Sweat glands combining form
Also called sudoriferous glands
Hidr/o means sweat
hidrosis is sweating
Ceruminous glands
Are modified sweat glands that produce cerumen (wax)
Hair description and its combining form
Hair is rodlike fibers made of dead cells filled with the protein keratin.
Combining forms for hair are:
pil/i, pil/o, and trich/o.
Nails and claws
Nails and claws are keratin plates in dogs and cats.
Sensitive dermal layer is the quick
Combining form for claw is onych/
Hooves
Hooves are the horny covering of the distal phalanx in ungulates such as horses, ruminants, and swine.
Combining form for hoof is ungul/o

Vestigial pad- medial surface of equine leg
Ergot
Vestigial pad- found in tuft of hair on equine fetlock joint
Horns
permanent structures that grow continuously after birth
Antlers
not permanent structures that are shed and regrown annually
Biopsy
removal of living tissue for examination
Incision, excision, and needle
Intradermal skin testing
Injection of a test substance into the skin layer to observe a reaction
Done to assess atopy - hypersensitive reaction

Sacs that hold the hair fibers
Exfoliative cytology
scraping of cells from tissue and examination under a microscope
