16
Q

What are the characteristics of the Larynx?

A

Called the “voice box”, used for voice production, allows for air to continue down the trachea, composed of cartilage, routes food down the esophagus toward the stomach

17
Q

What are the 3 major cartilages of the larynx?

A

Thyroid, Epiglottic, Cricoid

18
Q

What is the function of vocal ligaments?

A

forms the core of the vocal cord fold or true vocal cords

19
Q

What is the function of the Glottis?

A

opening between them that can be closed or opened to regulate airflow for voice production

20
Q

What are the functions of the trachea?

A

“wind pipe”, runs from the larynx down the mediastinum, horse-shoe shaped rings that are connected by a membrane. Contracts during coughing to expel air

21
Q

What is the last tracheal cartilage called?

A

Carina

22
Q

Characteristics of the Bronchi?

A

forms the bronchial or respiratory tree

23
Q

What are terminal bronchioles?

A

once the diameter is less than 1 mm

24
Q

What are respiratory bronchioles?

A

First part of the respiratory zone, leads to the alveolar duct and finally to clusters of alveolar sacs

25
Q

Characteristics of the left lung?

A

Smaller, two lobes

26
Q

Characteristics of the right lung?

A

larger, 3 lobes

27
Q

What is the parietal pleura?

A

Covers thoracic wall and superior surface of diaphragm

28
Q

What is the visceral pleura?

A

covers all external surfaces of the lungs

29
Q

What is pleural fluid?

A

Provides lubrication and surface tension

30
Q

What is the respiratory membrane?

A

microscopic structure allowing the diffusion of gas

31
Q

What is Boyle’s Law?

A

The pressure in lungs goes up as we fill them with air

32
Q

What is atmospheric pressure?

A

The pressure exerted by the air surrounding the body

33
Q

What is intrapleural pressure?

A

The pressure within the pleural cavity, pulls on the lungs to prevent collapse

34
Q

What is intrapulmonary pressure?

A

Pressure inside the lungs

35
Q

What is external respiration?

A

exchange of oxygen between the lungs and blood

36
Q

What is internal respiration?

A

Exchange of oxygen between the blood and body tissues

37
Q

What allows us to voluntarily alter our breathing patterns?

A

The cortex

38
Q

What is emphysema?

A

destruction of the alveolar wall

39
Q

What is chronic bronchitis?

A

excessive production of bronchial mucus & a productive cough that is long lasting

40
Q

What is asthma?

A

chronic airway obstruction due to inflammation

41
Q

What is pulmonary edema?

A

abnormal accumulation of fluid in the interstitial spaces and alveoli of the lungs
