Cranial Nerves Flashcards
Nerve I
Olfactory nerve. Entirely sensory, connects olfactory bulbs from the nose to temporal lobe.
Nerve II
Optic nerve. Entirely sensory, optic nerves from both eyes merge to form the optic chiasm.
Nerve III
Occular nerve. Motor only, controls the eye muscle that moves the eyeballs.
Nerve IV
Trochlear nerve. Motor only, controls the muscle that moves the eyeball. Superior oblique muscle
Nerve V
Trigeminal. Largest cranial nerves, mixed with motor & sensation. 3 regions: ophthalmic, maxillary & mandibular.
Nerve VI
Adbudcens. All motor only, controls the muscles that move the eyeball. Lateral rectus muscle.
Nerve VII
Facial nerve. Mixed with motor & sensation. Control muscles of the face for facial expressions and for mastication.
Nerve VIII
Vesitbulocochlear nerve. Sensory nerve. 2 branches: Vestibular- equilibrium, cochlear- hearing.
Nerve IX
Glossopharyngeal nerve. Mixed cranial nerve. Sensory- taste buds, monitors BP and CO levels. Motor: Swallowing
Nerve X
Vagus nerve. Mixed, motor: swallowing, vocalization and coughing. Sensory: sensation around the ear, some taste buds, sensory in the abdomen organs and thoracic region.
Nerve XI
Spinal accessory nerve. Motor and sensory. Coordinates head movement by supplying the SCM & Trap
Nerve XII
Hypoglossal nerve. Motor only. Supplies muscles of the tongue for moving & swallowing food.
