respiratory system Flashcards
what is the pathway of air
When we breathe in air moves through the mouth and nose and then
travels into the trachea.
The trachea carries air from the throat to the lungs.
Near the lungs the trachea divides into two tubes called bronchi one
entering each lung.
The small bronchi further divide into bronchioles which are very narrow
tubes.
At the end of the bronchioles are openings to the alveoli. This is where
gaseous exchange takes place.
what happens when you inhale
Air taken into the lungs
Diaphragm contracts or flattens enlarging the chest
cavity
Intercostal muscles contract causing the ribs to rise
Chest expands making the chest cavity bigger to take in
more air
what happens when you exhale
Air released from the body
Diaphragm relaxes or domes reducing the size of the
chest cavity
Intercostal muscles relax causing the ribs to drop
Chest decreases making the chest cavity smaller to
force out air
what is tidal volume
Tidal Volume – amount of air that enters the lungs during normal
inhalation at REST
what is Inspiratory Reserve Volume
amount of extra air inhaled during a deep
breath
what is Expiratory Reserve Volume
amount of extra air exhaled during a
forceful breath out
what is Residual Volume
amount of air left in the lungs following maximal
exhalation.
what is a spirometer
device
that measures lung
volume
what is stroke volume
the volume of
blood that is pumped out of
the heart in one contraction
