What are antihistamines?
Inhibit smooth muscle contraction in blood vessels and respiratory/GI tracts. Decrease capillary permeability.
What are the characteristics of 1st generation of histamines? Examples?
Cross the BBB and are sedative. Benadryl, Dramamine.
What are the characteristics of 2nd generation histamines? Examples?
Cant cross BBB, non-sedative. Longer half-lives.
Allegra, Claritin, Clarinex, Zyrtec, Semprex-d.
What do H1 Antagonists do?
Block pain and itch. Block vasodilation. Block Bronchoconstriction.
What are nasal decongestants?
Relieve nasal obstruction and discharge.
What are Antitussives?
Suppress cough by depressing center in medulla or increasing flow of saliva.
What are expectorants?
Liquefy respiratory secretions.
What are mucolytics?
By inhalation to liquefy mucous.
