Respiratory muscles Flashcards
What muscles are used in forced inspiration?
Scalenes
Sternocleidomastoid
Pectoralis major/minor
What muscles are used in forced expiration?
Internal intercostals
Oblique and rectus abdominus
quadratus lumborum
How many pairs of muscles make up the scalenes?
Three
Where are the scalenes located?
The neck
Where do the scalenes originate from?
The transverse processes from the cervical vertebrae of C2 and C7
Where do the scalenes insert onto?
The first and second ribs
What is elevated when the scalenes contract?
The ribs
Where is the origin of the sternocleidomastoid muscle?
Manubrium of the sternum (sterno) and the clavicle (cleido).
Where is the insertion point of the sternocleidomastoid muscle?
Mastoid process of the termporal bone of the skull
What is the Pectoralis major?
Fan shaped muscle making up the bulk of the chest muscle
Where is the pectoralis minor in relation to the major muscle?
Underneath it
Where are the oblique muscles?
In the lower 8 ribs to iliac crest
Where is the rectus abdominas?
Paired muscle running vertically on each side of the anterior wall of the abdomen
What seperates the two muscles of the rectus abdominas?
A midline band of connective tissue called the linea alba (white line)
Where does the rectus abdominas extend from?
pubic symphysis inferiorly to the xiphoid process and lower costal cartilages (5-7) superiorly
