respiratory L19 Flashcards
what is the epithelium that lines conducting zone?
pseudostratified ciliated epithelium
what are the structures found in the bronchus?
ciliated epithelium, goblet cells, smooth muscle, mucus glands, cartilage plate
what is the main function of the bronchus?
conducting air
What is the main function of bronchioles?
-control flow of air
-Smooth muscle allows for constriction and relaxation
what is providing the tone to the wall of the bronchioles?
smooth muscle as no cartilage
what structures are absent in the bronchioles?
cartilage, goblet cells, mucus glands
What structures are present in the bronchioles?
-smooth muscle, columnar ciliated cells, club cells
club cell secretion
secreted by club cells in the bronchioles
more watery, antimicrobial, can still capture dust particles and move it
what condition affects bronchioles?
asthma. Constriction of bronchioles
how does asthma inhaler work?
relaxes smooth muscle in the bronchioles- bronchodilator
(salbutamol)
how to check for asthma?
give salbutamol and see if weezing subsides
is there gas exchange in the respiratory bronchioles?
no too thick
what are the 3 major cells in the alveoli?
-type 1 cells( squamous pneumocytes)
type 2( surfactant cell) - secretes surfactant
Alveolar macrophage
what is the main function of the surfactant that is secreted by surfactant cells in the alveoli?
reduce the tension on the water layer lining the alveoli
alveoli would collapse if there was only a water layer
what is the width of the diffusion barrier in the alveoli?
0.5 um- 500 nm
