Resistance to obedience Flashcards
resistance to social influence - social support
a situational factor when an individual gets support of others who are resisting pressures to obey
explanations = 1 increases their confidence that their view is correct 2 disobedient behaviour is less obvious so not seen as a single m minority group
resistance to social influence - locus of control internal and external explanations - more or less likely to conform? (Rotter)
high internal loc = individual holds themselves responsible for events that occur in their life - more likely to resist pressures to obey and conform as they make decisions based on their own belief and have greater self belief
high external loc = individuals believe events that occur are due to external factors that are out of their control - less likely to resist pressures to conform and obey as they believe they have no power to affect circumstances of their life and have low self belief
locus of control evidence
(resistance)
Holland replicated Milgram’s study and investigated loc - internal loc p’s 37% didn’t continue to 450v - external loc p’s 23% didn’t continue to 450v
social support evidence (resistance)
Asch’s research showed the confederate not conforming didn’t have to give the right answer the fact they rant following the majority is enough to enable the p to follow their own mind and if the non-conforming started conforming again so did the naive p
resistance to social (loc) influence strengths
-Holland repeated Milgram’s study and measures where p’s were internal or external 37% of internals didn’t go to 450v and 23% of externals didn’t continue which increases the validity as internals showed greater resistance
resistance to social influence weaknesses
-not all research shows the link between loc and resistance as Twenge et al analysed data from Americans loc studies over 40 years showing people have become more external but also ore independent so if resistance was linked to loc we would predict people would become more internal however results may be due to changing in society
-role of loc may be exaggerated as Rotter found loc is only important in new situations and has little influence in similar situations so people who have obeyed in specific situations are more likely to again even if they’re high internal loc so only useful in explaining a narrow range of new situations
