Research Issues Flashcards
What are demand characteristics?
Any cue from the researcher or from the research situation that may give hints toward the participants in what the experiment is about
What is participant activity?
The tendency for participants to react to cues from the researcher or research environment
What are Investigator effects?
Any effects of the investigator’s behaviour on the DV.
What are single blind procedures?
When participants do not know which condition they are taking part in in an experiment
What are double blind procedures?
When neither participant nor investigator knows which condition the participants are taking part in
What is randomisation?
The use of chance to control for the effects of bias when designing materials and deciding the order of conditions
What is standardisation?
Using exactly the same formulised procedures and instructions for al participates in a research study
What three things can a researcher reduce using standardisation?
Situational variables
Investigator effects
Demand characteristics
