Correlations Flashcards
What is a Correlation?
When a researcher investigates an association or relationship between two variables (co-variables)
What are Co-variables?
Variables investigated within a correlation.
Why are Co-variables not labelled as Independent or dependent variables?
Because a correlation investigates as association/relationship between variables rather than trying to show a cause and effect relationship.
What is a Positive Correlation?
As one co-variable increases so does the other.
What is a Negative Correlation?
As one co-variable increases the other decreases.
What is Zero Correlation?
When there is no association/relationship between co-variables.
What is Correlation Coefficient?
A number between -1 and +1 that represent the direction and strength of the relationship between co-variables.
What is an Intervening Variable?
A variable that comes between two other variables and can be used to explain the relationship between the two variables.
What numbers are considered a strong correlation?
0.8-1
What numbers are considered a mild correlation?
0.5-0.8
What is considered to be a weak correlation?
0.3-0.5
What numbers are considered to have no correlation?
0-0.3
