Experiments Flashcards
What is controlled in a Lab experiment?
Both the IV and the environment are manipulated and controlled by the environment
What is controlled in a Field experiment?
Only the IV is controlled and manipulated by the researcher
Whatis controlled in a Natural experiment?
Nothing is controlled
What is controlled in a Quasi experiment?
Only the environment is controlled by the researcher
What is a pro of a Lab experiment?
There is a high level control so it is easy to replicate - this helps to increase the internal validity
What is a con of a Lab experiment?
The tasks participants are asked to carry out may not be representative of everyday activities and therefore lacks mundane realism
What is a pro of a Field experiment?
There is higher ecological validity (real world setting) and mundane realism than a lab setting as the environment is more natural
What is a con of a Field experiment?
Increased realism means that there is loss of control of confounding and extraneous variables - this makes replication more difficult
What is a pro of a Natural experiment?
They often have high external validity because they involve the study of real-world issues
What is a con of a Natural experiment?
Naturally occurring events may happen rarely which reduces the opportunities for research.
What is a pro of a Quasi experiment?
They have control over the environment which reduces extraneous variables - this helps to make replication more possible
What is a con of a Quasi experiment?
Researchers have no control over the IV so they cannot claim that the IV has caused any observed change
