What is an Interview?
A ‘live’ encounter where the interviewer asks a set of questions to assess an interviewee’s thoughts and, or experiences.
What is a Structured Interview?
Where the questions are decided in advance - they are pre-determined
What is an Unstructured Interview?
There are no pre-determined questions - starts out with some general aims and lets the interviewee’s answers guide subsequent questions - like a conversation
What is an Interview Schedule?
A set of pre-set questions for an interviewer to use
What is a group Interview?
More than one participant is interviewed at one time
What is a Semi-Structured Interview?
Combines some pre-determined questions and some questions developed in response to the answers given
What is Interviewer Bias?
Bias that occurs as a result of the interviewer. May be the way they respond to participants, the topic areas etc. It impacts the results that are obtained from the interview
Why are group interviews good?
It balances out the power relationship and others have people to back up each others points - helps to increase validity
Why should interviews be conducted in a quiet room?
Interviewee will be more open - this means that they will be more honest and comfortable
What do structured interviews include?
An interview schedule
How are Interviews made ethical?
Reminded that their answers are confidential in topics that are that may be personal or sensitive
What is a strength of structured interview?
- They are straight forward to replicate which makes them more reliable - increases internal validity
What is a strength of an unstructured interview?
- More flexibility which increases the validity of the data
What is a weakness of unstructured interviews?
- There may be an increased risk of interviewer bias
- A risk of Social Desirability Bias - decreases the validity of the data collected
