How would you normally gain consent in research
A
Participant must
- have and understand all relevant ingo about the activity
- be competent to give consent
- not be under any threat or indecements
- be able to withdraw at anytime
Can do this by providing a participant info sheet

How might you gain consent from someone whose capacity to consent fluctuates
A
If they have capacity, give them the relevant info
-establish from the start how you will use their data and what will happen if they lose capacity
Allow the patient to withdraw if they no longer want to be involved
If they lack capacity, staff must act in best interests

What would you need to provide the ethics committee if you were to research on patients who lack capacity
A
Balancing the risks and benefits of the research method
- how invasive is it
- how distressing is it
- what are the associated consequences
