Reproductive Flashcards
Describe the difference between meiosis and mitosis
Meiosis- half of the chromosomes go to one cell and half go to the other. Each cell ends up with a identical daughter cells to that of the parent cells
Mitosis- chromosomes do not produce duplicate copies of themselves before the daughter cells pull apart. Half of the total number of chromosomes go to each daughter cell.
What animal had an os penis
Dog
Why is the mid piece of the spermatozoon referred to as the “power plant” of the cell ?
It contains many energy producing mitochondria
Where does fertilization usually take place
Fallopian tube
What animal is polyestrus ?
Cattle
Dog
Fox
Horse
Cattle
Which animal is multiparous
Dogs
Horses
Cattle
Primates
Dogs
In cold conditions what muscle contracts to pull the testes up closer to the body for warmth
Cremaster
What word refers to the chromosomes that occur in pairs
Diploid
Which cells have a haploid chromosome numbers
Spermatozoa and ova
What animal does not have bulbbourethral glands
Dogs
What occurs during proestrus
The epithelial lining of the vagina cornifies
Which animal is diestrus?
Cattle
Swine
Dog
Fox
Dog
When are spermatozoa transported from the vas deferens to the abdominal urethra
During ejaculation
What happens if an ovum has been fertilized and implants in the uterus
Progesterone is produced and the corpus luteum is maintained
In which animal is the length of the heat cycle unpredictable
Queen
Order the stages of estrus
Proestrus
Estrus
Metestrus
Diestrus
Anestrus
What species are induced ovulators
Cat
Cow
Rabbit
Dog
Cat, rabbit, dog
Spermatozoa is produced by a process called
Spermatogenesis
Spermatogenesis begins at the periphery of the
seminiferous tubule
What hormone is responsible for male secondary sex characteristics
Testosterone
Link the testes with the rest of the body. Tubelike, connective tissue structures that contain blood vessels, nerves, lymphatic vessels, and the vas deferens
Spermatic cord
Form heat exchange mechanism along the testes
Pampiniform plexus
Muscular tube that connects the tail of the epididymis with the pelvic portion of the urethra
Vas deferens
What happens in proestrus
Follicle development and estrogen/ FSH hormone is released
During estrus what happens
Ovulation (egg releases)
LH hormone is released
What happens during diestrus
Progestin hormone is released and the corpus Leuteum develops (fetus)
