Reproduction Flashcards
what does the male reproductive system consist of?
testes, duct system, prostate gland, seminal vesicles, penis
what is the function of the testes?
produce sperm and testosterone
what is the structure of the testes?
lobules containing seminiferous tubules which merge into a single tubule the rete testis which then joins the epididymis
what are seminiferous tubules made of?
tunica propria, thick seminiferous epithelium, basal lamina
what are the types of seminiferous tubules?
spermatogenic (sperm producing)
sustentacular (support sperm production)
what is the process of spermatogenesis?
spermatogonia give rise to spermatozoa
where does the final maturation of spermatozoa occur?
the epididymis
where are interstitial leydig cells found?
Found between seminiferous tubules in
interstitial tissue
what do leydig cells produce?
androgens mainly testosterone
where is the prostate found?
inferior to urinary bladder
what are the 4 zones of the prostate?
– transitional zone
– central zone
– peripheral zone
– anterior fibromuscular stroma
does the central zone surround the ejaculatory ducts?
yes
does the anterior fibromuscular stroma contain glandular tissue?
no
what is the function of the prostate?
Secretion of seminal fluid rich in citric acid & hydrolytic enzymes
what are the functions of the female reproductive system?
- Oogenesis (product’n of female gametes (ova))
- Reception of male gametes (spermatozoa)
- Provision of a suitable environment
for fertilisation of ova by spermatozoa
for development of fetus - Means of expulsion of developed fetus to external environment
- Nutrition of the newborn
