Integumentary System Flashcards
what does the dermis of the skin consist of?
connective tissue
what does the outer epidermis of the skin consist of?
keratinized stratified squamous epithelial tissue
what does the hypodermis of the skin consist of?
a subcutaneous layer of loose connective tissue, which binds the skin to underlying structures and adipose tissue
what are the layers of the skin?
dermis, epidermis and hypodermis
what are the appendages of the skin?
hair, nails, sweat and sebaceous glands
what are the layers of the epidermis?
- stratum basale
- stratum spinosum
- stratum granulosum
- stratum lucidum
- stratum corneum
what is emphysema?
occurs when elastin and collagen are destroyed, bronchioles collapse leads to hypoxemia
what is the primary structure in the epidermis?
keratinocytes
what cells are found in the epidermis?
keratinocytes, melanocytes, merkel cells and langerhans
what is the function of the epidermis?
- protection from UV light
- maintenance of fluid and electrolyte balance
- sensory and immune function
what is the thickest layer of the epidermis?
the stratum corneum which contains dead cells called corneocytes which contain keratin
what does the stratum granulosum of the epidermis contain?
glycolipids for waterproofing
where is prekeratin found in the epidermis?
stratum spinosum
what layer of the epidermis is closest to the dermis?
stratum basale
what are melanocytes and where are they found?
synthesize melanin’s, scavenge free radicals to protect against UV, found in stratum basale
what is a merkel cell?
tactile epithelial cell with sensory receptors for touch, found in stratum basale
what are langerhans cells?
epidermal dendritic cells that are a type of macrophage, found in stratum spinosum
what are the two layers of the dermis?
papillary dermis and reticular dermis
what are the 2 types of sweat glands?
eccrine (merocrine) and apocrine
what type of sweat gland is associated with cooling skin?
eccrine (merocrine)
where do apocrine sweat glands secrete?
found in axilla and anogenital area
secretes onto hair follicles not skin
what activates sebaceous secretions?
androgens
what is the innermost layer of the skin?
the hypodermis or subcutaneous layer
what function does the hypodermis provide?
insulation and shock absorption
what are grooves in the epidermis called?
dermatoglyphic
do the merocrine sweat glands excrete directly onto the skin?
yes
