Gastrointestinal Tract Flashcards
what attaches the tongue to the mouth?
lingual frenelum
what are the types of papillae on the tongue?
filiform, fungiform, circumvallate, foliate papillae
what are the layers of the alimentary canal?
- mucosa
- submucosa
- muscularis externa
- serosa
what are the components of the mucosa?
- epithelium
- lamina propria
- muscularis mucosae
what type of epithelium is found in the mucosa?
simple columnar with goblet cells
what is lamina propria composed of?
thin layer CT with blood and lymph vessels, glands and MALT
what composes the muscularis mucosa?
circular and longitudinal smooth muscle
what is the submucosa composed of?
dense irregular connective tissue, blood and lymph vessels and nerve clusters (submucosal plexus or meissners plexus)
what do the submucosal and meissners plexus do?
regulates secretion and blood flow to alimentary canal
what is the muscular externa composed of?
circular and longitudinal smooth muscle with myenteric or auerbachs plexus nerves
what is the serosa composed of?
simple squamous epithelial tissue and loose CT
what is the function of the serosa?
to support and anchor digestive organs
what are the 5 regions of the stomach?
- cardia
- fundus
- body
- pyloric antrum
- pylorus
what are the divisions of the small intestine?
duodenum, jejunum, ileum
what is the mucosa of the stomach comprised of?
simple, tubular gastric glands
is the mucus of the stomach alkaline or acidic?
alkaline
what cell types are found in the principal glands of the stomach?
chief cells, parietal cells, mucous neck cells and endocrine cells
what do chief cells produce?
pepsinogen (precursor to pepsin)
what do parietal cells secrete?
hydrochloric acid and intrinsic factor
what function does the HCl in the stomach provide?
activates pepsinogen and sterilizes contents
what does intrinsic factor do?
reabsorbs vitamin B12
what are the types of endocrine cells found in the stomach?
gastrin producing (stimulate the secretion of acid and pepsin) and somatostatin producing (inhibit g cells)
what are plicae circularis?
crescent shaped folds of mucosa and submucosa found in small intestine (mainly jejunum) increase surface area by 3
what forms the surface of the intestinal villi?
simple columnar epithelium containing enterocytes, goblet cells and endocrine cells
what openings are found between the intestinal villi?
crypts of leiberkuhn which secretes intestinal juice
what are peyers patches?
aggregations of lymph nodes in the lamina propria of the ileum
what are the submucosal glands of the duodenum called?
brunners glands which secretions protect the mucosa
what is the primary function of the large intestine?
reabsorption of water and inorganic salts
are plicae circularis or intestinal villi present in the large intestine?
nope
why is the wall of the appendix thick?
due to large accumulations of lymphoid tissue in the lamina propria and submucosa
