Reproduction Flashcards
what is asexual reproduction?
creation of offspring without fusion of egg/sperm
examples of asexual reproduction?
budding - new individuals from outgrowths
fission - separation of parent into two or more indivuduals
parthogenesis - development of new individual from unfertilised egg
fragmentation - breaking of body parts into pieces that will develop into adults
advantages and disadvantages of asexual reproduction?
ad - faster, individual passes on all genes, successful genomes retained
dis - can’t deal with environmental change
what is gametogenesis?
development of gametes
what is oogenesis?
development of mature egg
what is spermatogenesis?
formation of sperm - continuous and profilic
what is sexual reproduction?
fusion of haploid gametes to form a diploid zygote
advantages and disadvantages of sexual reproduction?
dis - two fold - produce half as many daughters
ad - variation, can adapt, get rid of deleterious alleles, mash recessive mutations
ways sexual cycle could have evolved?
fusion of haploid cells followed by meosis
meosis of diploid to form haploid
what is special about pophyra umbilcias?
releases gametes and reproduces sexually
produces spores which settle and bore into shells
what is the haplontic stage?
where vegetative stage haploid
only diploid is the zygote
what is the diplontic stage?
where vegetative stage is diploid
gamtetes are haploid
what is the diplo-haplontic stage?
where vegetative stages alternate between haploid and diploid
