Plant Structure Flashcards
what is the phenotype?
physical characteristics that determine likelihood of survival
what is phenotypic plasticity?
how susceptible the phenotype is to environmental influence
systems in plants?
roots - deliver water, minerals and anchorage
stems/leaves - capture sun and CO2
types of tissue?
dermal - environmental interaction
vascular - transport
ground - photosynthesis, support, storage
what does ephemeral mean?
where the flowers and leaves are short lasting
difference between monocots and eudicots?
mono - narrow leaves with parallel veins flowers in 3s no main root eudicot - broad leaves with branching veins a main root petals in 4/5s
difference between spring and autumn wood?
spring - light, maximising water, thin
autumn - dark, thick, maximising strength
difference between growth overall and the organs?
overall - indeterminate - keeps going
organs - determinate
what are meristems?
regions of undifferentiated cell growth
what is primary growth?
apical meristems roots and shoots
what is secondary growth?
lateral meristems, thickening and stregth, adds muscular tissue
what is auxillary dominance?
auxillary buds are produced at intervals, growth suppressed by near by active buds
pruning can reduce supression
produces buds for leaves, thorns
what will happen if theres weak apical dominance?
grow outwards - bushy
three stages of development?
juvenile, adult vegetative and adult reproductive
what is arabopsis thaliana?
weed in the mustard family - model organism as small genome and broad range
transformed into anything
